Business Story

Why this business was started

After viewing the artwork that is the Moraga stairway in San Francisco (see pic), we invented a method to produce stair decals that could be incorporated into any home and provide the same effect. At the time (in 2016), no one was producing this product, and it seemed like (and is) a unique and engaging way to decorate an otherwise useless but necessary part of many people's homes (the stairway). Although we have been copied by some Chinese companies and others, no one else is providing the customized products and service of RiserArt

The reason of selling this business

I've been producing RiserArt for about 3 years now, and I'm ready to move on to other projects. Everyone who buys our products loves them (see reviews.), but I've been unable to generate enough traction to make this product as big as it should be. we have a presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest, but no real social media marketing skills. This company could be very successful in the hands of someone with actual marketing skills. At times, when we have had a boost from outside social media exposure, we have received 15 or more orders a day, and the company is extremely profitable at those levels.

What's involved in running this business

Orders arrive from Shopify, Etsy, and Amazon. We currently have a vast library of laid-out designs, and most orders are filled from those designs. In some cases, orders are received for designs that have not previously been printed, and then there is an art layout process (which usually takes about 15 minutes) to produce a new design. Occasionally, also, we get orders for custom artwork, and that requires a similar layout process. Once the layout is done, the job is sent to the printer (HP L310/L315). printing takes about 20 minutes per job. After the job is printed, there is a cutting process to cut the printed job down into panels, which takes about 10 minutes per job. Orders are shipped via Priority Mail, and the various shopping carts create the labels.

Seller‘s Advice

How to grow this business

Better marketing, especially on social media. Video marketing would help a lot. Approach big-box hardware stores and get them to take orders for you. Profitability levels: 2 orders/day = break even 5 orders/day = $4500/mo income (after expenses) 10 orders/day = $12000/mo income (after expenses)

Skills to have

Some graphic design and artwork layout skills are required, but sophisticated skills are not necessary. Layout tasks are simple and can be taught in a few hours.
