Why this business was started
I was a stay at home mom with a new baby and toddler and was desperate for a creative outlet outside of the home. I wanted something I could devote some time to without it taking over my life or taking away too much time from my family. For years, most of my adult life, I took pleasure in shopping for other people. If I knew a friend or sister was looking for an outfit for an upcoming trip or a dress for an event I'd do the shopping and they always loved what I picked out. More and more friends and family would ask for help and advice with style, furniture, gifts. For me, opening a small boutique felt like a natural fit. At first I decided to open a small booth at a vendor market with home decor and gifts. After a few months I added a small rack of clothes and couldn't keep the clothing rack stocked. The apparel took off! Shortly after that I decided to add an online option, but became too busy to manage both. A year after opening our doors I was online only here on Shopify. It grew and grew ever since (even when I tried to slow things down).
The reason of selling this business
After 4.5 years I hit a place in my business that was forcing me to take things to the next level (larger space, employees, more inventory) and I was not prepared to put in the time to make it happen. My goal from the beginning was to be a mom and wife first. I realized the business was taking more and more time away from making that possible. My husband has an incredibly successful career and we both agreed having Seven Oaks was no longer worth the time and energy. Also, owning this business was never about the money for me. It's been completely fueled by passion rather than the desire to make $$. When it was doing it's best (and could have done better) I felt overwhelmed and unhappy. The things that brought me joy were not exactly the profit and growth. I loved the creative side, the buying, social media, connecting with customers. I did not like being so busy that I couldn't focus on the parts I enjoyed.
What's involved in running this business
Buying inventory, taking photos of inventory, adding to Shopify, fulfilling orders, shipping, bookkeeping and accounting (I outsourced that), defining your brand/style, researching upcoming brands, advertising and marketing.
Seven Oaks is an online women's apparel and gift shop offering timeless, classic pieces that can be mixed and matched all year long and will last for years to come. We try to avoid trendy styles that will be out of date after a season and focus on fabrics that will last and remain looking great after washing. We have customers from NYC (we ship to Manhattan often) to California (we have plenty of customers in San Luis Obispo!).
Why should someone buy this store?
It has an incredible amount of potential. Every month and year the business grew even when I tried to close it for a month to slow its growth. I rarely sent out emails because I didn't want more orders and never did much with advertising or marketing other than sharing on social media. We have a loooong list of emails too!
How can the future owner improve the business?
Being consistent with adding new arrivals, sales, photographing new arrivals, buying new merchandise for upcoming seasons, and marketing (emailing customers and social media.
What work have you put into the store?
I established a brand that resonates with our customers, I built trust with customers and was honest about fits/styles/quality and I made sure to accommodate customers needs and answered their questions. I took pride in packing and shipping (I only shipped the wrong thing once in all 4.5 years). I created a website layout that was easy to use for customers and worked on getting quality images for the website. I established a good following on social media as well (instagram and facebook). Our frequent customers trusted me to pick out styles for them when they were in need of something new.

How to grow this business
I have a long list of emails and rarely made the time to utilize such a valuable asset of the shop. I was too busy trying to keep up with current orders. If I were to grow the business I'd focus on marketing and being consistent with emailing our current list of customers and potential customers. I never worked with influencers either. I think that could be beneficial as well. We also never did any advertising or retargeting. There is SO much potential for growth!
Skills to have
Understanding Shopify is helpful, but it is also easy to learn if you don't. Mailchimp is the platform I used for collecting emails and if I ever sent out an email that's the system I used. Some understanding of shipping, photography (even with a phone), social media and the basics of buying are all helpful. I was completely self taught and started with zero experience.
