Business Story

Why this business was started

I purchased this business last year from Exchange marketplace with just 2k Instagram followers and barely a hundred dollars in revenue. I wanted to learn how dropshipping worked, and young women's fashion is the easiest place to start. I taught myself everything since then and love being an independent business owner! Originally I wanted to supplement my income - but lately I've been making as much as my regular job off Shook Love profits!

The reason of selling this business

I'm too distracted with my 9-5 job (which I love) to focus on this full time and I've been inconsistent (see revenues, since May 2019 when I bought the shop). Some months I'm on top of everything and have huge revenues, other months I don't even have time to work on it so it drops. I will say the store traffic and revenue is 100% correlated with Instagram post consistency! I just don't have the time every day. When I took over Shook Love, I never spent anything on marketing and I made my money back in less than 4 months so everything since then has been pure profit for me. It's been great and I would love to keep dropshipping, but I'm not passionate enough about teen fashion to give up my job for it - even though it pays just as much!

What's involved in running this business

You'll need to post on Instagram daily, that's the only marketing it needs. Fulfilling orders through the Shopify/Oberlo/AliExpress app is SUPER easy (thank you Shopify!) and that takes about 2-5 minutes per order tops once you get the hang of it. Of course answering emails to customer service is always needed, but I've averaged only 1-2 requests per week and it's usually just people asking for their tracking number. Other than that adding and sourcing new products about once a month to keep it fresh, and if you want to start adding Influencer marketing that would make a huge difference - I just never had the time or desire to (again, teen fashion isn't really my passion).

Other details about profit: NOTE! The profit I listed is calculated based on sales starting July 2020 but the profit margin % is based on Shopify's average monthly revenue since 2017. The profit margin from July 2020 is more like 48% (I purchased the store in 2019, so that's why I used these numbers, but the previous Shook Love owner wasn't active, barely made money and let the store go dormant which skewed the automatic calculations that Shopify made). You can see the revenue pick up starting in 2019 when I took over the store. But because of my personal life, there have been months where I barely work on Shook Love and others where I've been dedicated and made over $3,000 in profit. Revenues are affected by seasonality of course, since most customers are younger teen girls. Since I markup all the items over 2x the cost and have few expenses (Shopify basic is only $39.99/mo) the PM is a solid 50%. Maintaining this pricing model will ensure you always keep a 50% PM too! If you want any details regarding the financials since I've taken over please just ask and I'm happy to share with you!

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

Engage Instagram influencers! I've had so many influencers ask if we offer partnerships, discount codes or other promo arrangements. I never had time or desire to manage it over the past year so I haven't done it. Expand to a boys/male clothing would be a huge market to tap into - that was requested frequently from customers. Also, try other sales channels like Facebook, YouTube or Google Ads, those are untouched.

    Skills to have

Nothing specific, I had no knowledge of Instagram marketing and it's still easy to be successful. Anyone can follow the steps to post on Instagram, fulfill orders and be a kind customer service rep. One thing that takes discretion is sourcing the products - you don't want to choose products with poor reviews, products that could disappear from your supplier quickly, poorly rated stores, etc.

    Kayte L.Current store owner
Hello! My name is Kayte, I purchased this store, Shook Love, in 2019 (from Exchange Marketplace, thanks Shopify!) and grew it to 10x the Instagram followers and over 200% increased monthly revenue. While I've loved the extra money and learning experience, I simply don't have the time to keep up this store, and as a one-woman operation with a 9-5 job, revenues are volatile based around what else is going on in my life. But if you're consistent, this is a great opportunity for someone who loves Instagram marketing and niche aesthetic fashion!
