Why this business was started
I started Social Distancing Hat in March because I was worried that my family and friends would not remember to stay a safe distance from people during the pandemic. I also thought it would be a stylish and relevant statement to wear in public, and remind other people to keep their distance. Because I have a good salary already with my career, I decided to donate all profits from this side project to Meals on Wheels.
The reason of selling this business
I work a demanding full time job in tech. I started this on the side, planning to spend an hour or two a week on it and sell at most 100 hats. When things took off and we surpassed 1,500 hats sold in little more than a month (March-April) I decided to cut off all sales as it was becoming too demanding to deal with the customer inquiries alongside my actual job. I want to pass the torch to someone who actually has ~5-8 hours a week to help this grow and can become personally successful with the success of this business. It’s really straightforward.
What's involved in running this business
There are three parts to running Social Distancing Hat: (1) Free promotion via news outlet outreach and social media influencer partnerships, (2) integration with a cheap manufacturer/shipper to handle all orders for you, (3) dealing with standard customer inquiries and order changes. You can also innovate by introducing new products related to Social Distancing, as we have with our Indoor Voices and super successful Dr. Fauci hats.
We also have an Instagram Checkout enabled account which is included, allowing people to purchase directly on Instagram which has driven substantial sales. These are mostly limited to top brands right now, so this is special!

How to grow this business
In the two months I had the store open, I found it easy to go from $0 to $50k in revenue. My recommended playbook which you could easily duplicate with time to get this to $200k+ would be (1) find a cheaper supplier than Printful to profit an additional $10 per hat sale (right now we profit $10 per hat, you can get this to $20 easily), (2) reach out to more Instagram accounts to promote your hat in exchange for free product (one post drove $12k for us), (3) occasionally offer new hats or product types to unlock new revenue streams (we did this twice for $20k incremental sales). We've been covered by New York Magazine, Politico, Women's Wear Daily, and more–there's demand for this stuff!
