General description

Space City Drones is an e-commerce company that sells personal and professional drones and accessories and insurance coverage for drones. The website domain, [REDACTED] has been going strong since the last quarter of 2014. There is no inventory as all orders are drop shipped from our suppliers. Drone use is growing and will continue to do so. 2.4 million personal drones were sold in the US alone in 2016, more than double the 1.1 million sold in 2015.

Due to unforeseen events in his personal life, the owner of Space City Drones, has not been able to run or manage the company for the last year. I have been keeping it going for him but have not done any marketing or promotion of the company or website, other than an Instagram campaign of great photos taken with drones. In spite of this lack of attention and effort on my part, the number of visits to the website continues to be strong and orders are still coming in. The website got 60,000 visits during 2017. Based on past sales and website traffic, Shopify has placed the value of Space City Drones at approximately $24,000.

There is a lot of potential for someone who is ready to take over the company, start marketing and promoting, expand products, follow-up with inquiries, etc. We work with a very good fraud management company who provides an additional layer of review and protection against fraudulent orders - which is very helpful with such high priced products.

Financials and traffic

The numbers have gradually dropped to very low levels as almost nothing is being done to promote or pursue customers and/or orders. The profit will grow as the numbers of sales increases. The biggest selling drones are made by DJI and there isn't a large profit margin for these drones. Other companies and other products (i.e. the insurance coverage) have a larger profit margin.

Business Expenses

Since I'm not doing any marketing at this time other than the Instagram campaign, there is no expenses. The $85 per month is what I'm spending for someone to handle the Instagram posts. There is a campaign going on that was paid for over a year ago that automatically reposts blogs every few weeks throughout the year on FB and Twitter. I don't know how much that campaign costed the owner. Some of those posts are still being reposted currently.

Q & A

Why should someone buy this store?

There is a lot of potential. I have not been able to do more than the bare minimum - probably even less than that. The potential for growth and stability in this company is tremendous. One great aspect to be aware of is that we work with one of the largest banks, Affirm, to provide the option of financing for our customers that can all be done on-line. It is difficult for companies to get accepted by Affirm for them to provide this service.

How can the future owner improve the business?

Ad word campaigns, a lot more social media, adding new products, adding new areas to ship to (outside of the US), following up with the on-line and phone inquiries (including requests for quotes and bids).

What work have you put into the store?

Unfortunately, since taking over for the owner, I have done very little. I have added some new products to the store, made a few revisions to some products on the website, and fulfilled orders. To explain the large dip in visits, the website was briefly turned off - for about four weeks the end of 2016 into January 2017. That really hurt the number of visitors for a couple of months once the website was active again.
