Why this business was started

I started this business as I had previous Facebook advertising experience and knew there was a massive lack of advertisers utilising Facebook advertising in the hiking, camping and outdoors niche. My prediction was correct and the return on ad spend I am seeing since starting this store is great. I was initially surprised that many other E-commerce store owners hadn't started utilising Facebook ads to sell the same product as me after they saw the great results I was achieving, but my Facebook pixel has so much more customer purchase data for the Summit Stove's ideal customer that I can outbid any competitors in the Facebook advertising auction who try to compete with me. Also, my shipping times for the Summit Stove from all Chinese suppliers were a nightmare originally because the stove has an ignition/spark feature to it, meaning the vast majority of big shipping couriers in China (Yanwen, Yunexpress etc.) are not willing to risk shipping this product. After several weeks of searching I finally found my private Chinese fulfilment agent towards the end of September who has access to private shipping lines and all of my shipping issues have since been resolved and the business is thriving. Ultimately, these two factors make this business something very special.

The reason of selling this business

Several months ago I started my journey into the realm of private labelling and branding a line of products with a business partner alongside one of my passions which is Kitesurfing. This brand has since become my primary focus and I simply do not have the time to put in to scale Summit Hikers further. Now is an opportunistic time to invest in a store like this, given it is currently the hottest online shopping season of the year (Christmas shopping period) and is expected to be record online shopping sales due to COVID. Priced to sell quick.

What's involved in running this business

Managing Facebook ads which is our primary method of advertising and revenue generation. Communicating with our private Chinese agent who fulfils our best-selling product, our SummitStove and it's up-sell product - the Summit Adapter. Fulfilling orders for the rest of our products using Oberlo and Aliexpress. Managing our virtual assistant who is responsible for handling the customer service side of the business.

Other details about profit: I first started advertising with Facebook ads from January 2021 through April 2021 where I was seeing a great ROAS (return on ad spend), however I experienced Facebook ban issues at the time which put a halt on my ability to advertise. In August 2021, once I had found a solution for the bans I started advertising again and the results have been great since. The Shopify Exchange Software has included many months where I wasn't advertising in these store performance figures. My true amount of months advertising is 9 with a total of $59,800 USD revenue. Which means actual revenue when advertising on average is $6,644 USD/month, with an 12% net profit margin. If I had the time to put in to the store, I would increase net profit up to 20-30% by implementing email marketing (which is crucial for raising an Ecommerce stores bottom line, but since I haven't had the time, I have not implemented this) to boost total store revenue by 20-30% and possibly ship bulk to a US fulfilment warehouse to lower US COGS, which out of all countries has the highest shipping cost from China currently. Also, doing do CRO (conversation rate optimisation) for the store to maximise conversion rate. And finally, new Facebook ad creatives. I have only 1 ad creative that I made in August 2021, and this ad has been running ever since, given I haven't had the time to make more/better creatives. It is a rather boring video I use in the ad, straight from the suppliers warehouse, so you can only imagine how much the ROAS will increase with a better ad creative given the current one is already achieving a 2.5-4 ROAS. Implementing these things will raise the bottom line by a drastic amount, boosting this stores current net margin from 12% to 20-30% net.

    How to grow this business

    Eventually making the switch from a dropshipping store to a brand I think would be a beneficial route to take. I would continue scaling my current Facebook advertising campaigns and test advertising different products in the outdoors niche in order to drive more traffic. I would brand all of my products, ship bulk inventory of each of them to fulfilment centres in my primary customers countries; US, UK, CA, AUS, NZ. I would start selling more outdoor related products and utilise paid marketing in alternative channels to Facebook such as Tiktok and Youtube.

    Skills to have

    Ability to manage a virtual assistant, communicate effectively with suppliers, use Oberlo to fulfill orders from Aliexpress and have a basic understanding of how to run Facebook ads. If you are able to do these tasks, then you will have no issues operating this store.
