Why this business was started

I started this business for a client of mine and then later purchased it from him because of the success it was having. The reason he wanted to start the company is because he was very passionate about prepping and wanted to start an ecommerce business based around his passion. I, not knowing anything about the industry or concept, eventually became very passionate about helping people prepare for disasters, and the unique outdoor gear we could bring to our customers for outdoor adventures. Being in Northern Idaho, we love the outdoors and we know how dangerous the outdoors can be if unprepared in an emergency situation. I found the market to be very responsive and found opportunities for fast growth and expansion to many markets.

The reason of selling this business

I am in no hurry to sell it, but I will for the right price. The business did over $1 million in gross sales its first year and is poised to do about $2 million this year. I also own a marketing agency and am launching two more ecommerce stores this year so if I can sell this one at the right price, that will free up some of my time. I am also in process of liquidating my assets for early semi-retirement and handing off most of the management of my businesses to my son.

What's involved in running this business

This is a primarily drop ship business where we have developed strong relationships with all of the vendors. That part is done for you. We have some of the hottest products in the market and all vendor accounts can be transferred to you. You will need to fill out new dealer applications and be approved. Typically, most vendors require a credit card or debit card for all transactions, some require ACH but not many. We use an American Express card for all cost of goods and marketing expenses. This makes things easy to track for our accounting.

Essentially, when an order comes in, you issue a purchase order to the vendor, they ship it out for you. You enter the tracking information for the customer. Vendor sends you an invoice and you either pay it through their portal from the invoice, or the vendor automatically charges the card you have on file with them or ACH.

I am pretty aggressive with marketing, which is why the store has done so well. Our brand is well known in the market now and our top converting Google ads are for people searching 'survival gear systems'. I have a team that handles the marketing and they do very well and have tons of data they use to continually grow the business. You could do your own marketing if you are skilled, or hire other teams, or keep the ones working with it now. I have a Google Shopping team, Google Ads manager, social media management and ads team, and a variety of others who build out apps and do email marketing, like Klaviyo. All email marketing is automated, we have many great custom flows already built into the business.

You could hire one or two employees to help with the operations side of the business, bookkeeping, and customer service, or you could do it yourself and make higher profits. I have two employees who manage order processing, chats, calls, sales, and bookkeeping. We currently have the store integrated with Quickbooks Online and all of our bookkeeping, purchase orders, etc. are done through it.

We have worked hard to automate as much as possible, but the promise we make and what differentiates our business is our personalized, real human customer service, product knowledge, support and advice on preparing for disasters or outdoor adventures.

    How to grow this business

    I would continue with a steady and strong branding campaign, improve search engine optimization, maybe try another template to make the site faster and more user friendly. It works pretty well now but it has been such a rush that we are developing new strategies to put into place that there wasn't much time for before.

    The new owner should be passionate about the products, be willing to provide great customer service, Shopify experience a plus, and really just be a true entrepreneur who can build out creative ideas and execute them. This market is completely open.
