Business Story

Why this business was started

I started Sweet Dreams Candy after I was made redundant last year due to COVID. It was only supposed to be temporary but it blew up and it became my full-time job for 8 months.

It all started when my partner received a personalised retro sweets jar as a birthday gift and although we were impressed with the personalisation, we felt like we could improve on the design hugely and create more meaningful jars. After doing market research we saw that there were a few different companies doing the same thing, but none to the standard/quality that we aspired to. My inspiration came from personalised greetings cards from websites such as Thortful. I love the personalisation on the cards and I wanted to merge the two so that the design quality was as good, if not better than thoughtful and the jars were full of goodies! We expanded on Retro sweets and created a chocolate jar and a half and half jar which have been even more successful as we progressed. As far as we know, no one does chocolate or half and half jars like we do.

I think we succeeded and I'm really happy with how it has gone. We have a trust pilot account with a 4.9 rating from 170b reviews so I think our customers echo that.

The reason of selling this business

I found a new full-time job and I don't have the time for it anymore unfortunately.

This business could be someone's side hustle, or it could be a proper fully fledged business full-time. I just won't have enough time to carry on putting in the work to make it a success going forward. Even though all the hard work is done, I really feel like someone else could take it to the next level and I'd love to see it make even more progress. Sweet Dreams Candy means so much to us and we'll be sad to see it go but I know I have to put all my energy into my new job.

The potential is huge. Throughout the year there are so many marketing opportunities and the jar contents can be expanded to give more options. We always get asked about gluten free, dairy free etc and it's something we haven't had time to do but it's definitely a good idea going forward.

I'd suggest bringing out pick n mix boxes and use royal mail letterbox dimensions. These seem to do very well on tiktok and we have had questions regarding this in the past.

I'd also suggest thinking about a monthly subscription. We have a very high number of returning customers who love the company so I think a subscription service would be lucrative and it brings in money monthly. I was thinking about 3 different size treat boxes and each month it changes. You could even do a USA candy box one month, then a French candy box the next and change the theme each month.

The opportunities are endless, as long as every idea involves sweets, chocolate or both you are good to go and our customers will love it.

What's involved in running this business

Orders: So a typical day looks like this - an order will get processed via Shopify, I check the order, open up the relevant label file and personalise it. This takes about 1 minute. Then I'll export it as a PDF and print the label out using just a standard inkjet printer (ours is canon and it's been superb).

Once the label is printed, I'll pack the jar with the relevant contents and stick the label on. Once I've gift-wrapped the jar and put it in the box, I'll log into Royal Mail Click and Drop and purchase the shipping label, which I'll print using the Dymo 2XL label printer (superb bit of kit). This prints the label 6in x 4in and sticks straight onto the box. Then we are done!

We usually pre-pack lots of chocolate jars, retro sweets jars and half and half jars in preparation so that the process runs smooth. All in all the process from Shopify to Royal Mail is quick and we can print, pack and drop off over a hundred orders in a day easy. (you have to drop off your parcels before 3pm to make sure you don't miss the postman).

Customer service: This is dealt with via email and social media DMs. It's very easy to keep track of and usually we get back to customers almost straight away as it's usually a delivery query. We can check tracking using Royal Mail track & trace online.

Suppliers: I buy 4 different sizes of boxes from 2 different suppliers. I buy in bulk so I don't need to keep re-ordering and it works fine. Jars are the same I use 1 supplier for both sizes and they are fantastic they usually deliver next working day. I buy these in bulk as it's cheaper that way. I use Hancocks for wholesale sweets. It works well, they are always packaged really well and we haven't had any issues with them. Label paper I buy from AA Labels and again, they are great quality. You have to buy 2 different size labels and they have to be inkjet ready.

Design: I purchased a Shopify theme because although the free themes are great, I wanted to personalise it more and I felt this theme was perfect. It's very easy to update - all you need to do is create assets for each event/theme you're going for. I have a folder of assets I will include in the sale and these are ready to go.

I will also be available for any design work going forward as I'm a freelance designer and who knows Sweet Dreams better than me!

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

I'd put spend behind facebook and instagram campaigns. I'd add more products and maybe introduce pick n mix.

Hi, thanks for viewing. I started Sweet Dreams Candy after I was made redundant last year due to COVID. It was only supposed to be temporary but it blew up and it became my full-time job for 8 months. I've found a new job and now I can't give it the love and attention it deserves so I'm reluctantly selling. Big opportunity here!
