Business Story

Why this business was started

Switzerland had very low quality tea and there were few options to find good quality loose leaf tea. Due to this lack of competition and the fact that people search out high quality items in Switzerland and are not so price conscious, I saw a gap in a growing market and decided to create my own tea store.

The reason of selling this business

We deeply believe in our little brand. We have a loyal following on Social Media and quality tea, health and mindfulness is a growing market in the US, Switzerland and UK. We are having to move to Asia to be closer to our families and as such will not be able to effectively grow the business whilst living in another continent.

What's involved in running this business

Answering customer queries. Orders are automatically sent to the warehouse and fulfilled. There is an opportunity to lower the costs of the business and fulfill the orders yourself as the warehouse is the most expensive cost we have. Completing wholesale orders to cafes and invoicing them. Social media posts. Blog posts. Growing the business by going direct to cafes. Google ads. Facebook ads and posts. Managing stock levels and ordering from suppliers. Monthly newsletters. Quarterly VAT submissions. Yearly tax submission. 5 hours a week on keeping the business running, more if you are to visit and prospect at cafes and businesses, accelerate marketing and social media presence if you want to grow the business.

Other details about profit: We get large wholesale orders in the UK that are not reported on Shopify from cafes and this is the our main revenue for the UK ( also a good area to grow as we supply both loose leaf and teabags and they are biodegradable and organic). Most sales in Switzerland are B2C, so there is a good growth potential for prospecting cafes, hotels and restaurants to grow B2B revenue.

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

-Tea Subscription box - this is a growing area in the UK and a new interest in Switzerland. We already have custom designed tags and linen bags along with photos, so this could be implemented very quickly. A premium box could be offered, a single regular tea (green tea box/black tea box/mixed tea box) and also a starter set for the first order with tea infuser or teapot (premium box).

    • Partner with a coffee roaster in Switzerland and UK. The coffee roaster will then agree to distribute the high quality tea along with their coffee for a percentage of the profits. We are already in talks with a roaster in London to do this and have potential for collaboration with MAME in Switzerland as they are planning to start roasting their own coffee and we have a good relationship with them.

    • Grow presence on Pinterest. This is an untapped area for tea and could do very well indeed, considering once you post a set of photos they remain there and increase in SEO (unlike Instagram or Facebook where people will only look at teh most recent photos)

    • Partner with yoga studios offering tea with yoga sessions. This works very well as it fits into the mindfulness aspect of tea as well as health and you have a good target demographic with the people who like yoga.

    • Target more cafes in both Switzerland and the UK and grow the B2B side. People are recognizing that good quality tea provides a lot more flavour and a different experience and cafes, whilst they have focused on excellent coffee are now trending towards buying better quality tea to retain customers.

    • Ramp up the number of blogs produced, newsletters sent and social media posts to improve SEO and attract more organic searches.

    • Adjust Google ads and Facebook ads to use the high performing ones.

    • Attend more markets in both Switzerland and the UK to grow customer awareness and brand awareness.

-Increase SEO by increasing no. of interesting and relevant blog articles, establish collaborations and partnerships with different marketplaces, platforms, micro-influencers as well as other brands (lifestyle, other artisanal food & drink brands).

    Skills to have

Tea knowledge would be advantagous but not essential as we can teach you everything you need to know about every tea and what the most popular ones are.

It would be advantagous to have good skillls in writing blog articles or social media posts to grow the current following.

Quality tea is meant to be brewed and appreciated slowly. The act of drinking tea allows all of us to slow down, savour life, reflect, and in doing so, gain inner wisdom. In the hustle and bustle of modern life, this practice of slowing down and decluttering the mind is more important than ever to our physical and mental health. It is this philosophy that forms the cornerstone of Tèaura – where every sip of a perfectly brewed cup of tea, provides a moment of inner peace, tranquillity and reflection. Tèaura is based in the UK and Switzerland
