Business Story

Why this business was started

The Bircher Bar was started in late 2014 as a humble market stall in the Northern Rivers of NSW - serving fresh made health foods over a recycled timber bar.

It evolved rapidly from here late 2015 into a bustling cafe and pantry section in the Lismore CBD, serving a great range of vegetarian food and drink - all made from scratch and as locally sourced as possible.

At the beginning of 2018, the decision was made to close the cafe & pantry section to fully focus on the steadily-growing online store and wholesale arm of the business.
Through our wholesale business we now have 12 all-original, all-natural, small-batch and hand-made health foods stocked in over 60 locations Australia-wide with the stockists list steadily growing.

We also have a great system in place to continue to grow the wholesale side of the business easily and effectively. The wholesale business currently turns over an average of $3300 p/month with huge potential for growth via new products and more stockists.

The online store has approximately 150 high-quality health food products listed, made by The Bircher Bar and some of our favourite suppliers. It receives an average of 2500 visitors p/month and generates about $2850 in sales p/month (averaged over the last 3 months) – all of which is growing via SEO, ambassadors, advertising and word-of-mouth referrals.

There is endless potential to add other great products and expand the brand and offering.

The average profit margin across both businesses is ~40%. Both the Wholesale and Online business can be easily relocated to anywhere else in Australia.

Some key features of the business include:

*80 + 5-star product reviews

*Countless SEO keyword positions

*Huge investments into brand building, website design and national advertising

*Huge investments into professionally designed packaging, POS materials and graphic design

*60 active stockist locations with databases and systems in place to rapidly grow

*Professional social media advertising management

*All automated and targeted e-mail campaigns professionally setup

*Significant e-commerce integrations, apps and optimisations made (AfterPay included)

*Huge active social media followings and e-mail list (~2500 Facebook followers, ~8000 Insta followers, ~750 email subscribers, 1000 Pinterest followers)

*20 brilliant brand ambassadors on board with significant social media followings

*Great stockist and supplier relationships - only high quality and highly sought after products

*Have been promoted in various health food boxes such as Goodness Me Box, Fuel My Fitness and Paleo Box as well as shout outs from celebrities such as Tia-Clair Toomey & Montaigne.

The reason of selling this business

With a few recent and unexpected changes in personal circumstances, I am no longer able to dedicate the time required to continue building and growing the business. While there is huge potential for both the online store and wholesale business, it does require a certain amount of attention, as with anything worth building.

What's involved in running this business

As with all small business every day is different and the tasks are divers, however, the main tasks on a day to day basis include:

*Picking and packing online orders *Ordering stock and shipping orders out *Making up product barrels (muesli, latte blends etc.) *Responding to email enquiries *Sending out wholesale campaigns to get new stockists on-board *Marketing, Advertising and promotion activities

Time to run this business: approximately 45 hours per week

Other details about profit: NOTE: THE PROFIT FIGURE ABOVE IS INCORRECT. I'm unable to enter the Shopify sales data above as it has taken the averages from when we launched the website back in 2015 and not operating as online store so is not relevant. The number of orders stated refers to both the online store and whole business. The average revenue in the online store is ~$2850 AUD and the average revenue for the wholesale business is ~$3300 AUD (both averaged for last 3 months - check screenshots). The average profit margin is ~40% across both the wholesale and online store combined - therefore average gross profit is ~$2500.

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

Continue growing the wholesale client base, create new wholesale products, add more products and brands to the online store, scale advertising, work with ambassadors and continue to nurture the many current customer relationships!

    Skills to have

Nothing is super technical - a basic understanding of business and e-commerce is all that is required along with the passion to grow and build your own venture!

    Why use Exchange?

Exchange is the largest and fastest-growing marketplace for Shopify e-commerce stores

    Verified listing data

The revenue and traffic data that you see on each listing is pulled directly from its Shopify account. This means that the data has been verified. Exchange reviews and monitors listings for thorough and accurate information.

    Secure messaging platform

You will be able to communicate with sellers via a secure messaging platform. After you log in and request information from a listing, sellers are notified and have the ability to respond. When you are ready, you can make an offer.

    Encrypted payment capture

Exchange and Escrow.com have partnered together to provide you with safe transactions that have bank encryption, making sure that payment is securely captured. Escrow.com ensures that its users pass verification checks before transactions can proceed.

Take time to inspect the business

Once you submit payment to Escrow.com and the payment has been secured, the funds are held until you confirm that all assets received are as negotiated. You can use the inspection period to ask the seller any extra questions about the business.

    Safe store transfer

When the transaction is finalized, the dedicated migration team at Exchange will begin the process of making you the new owner of the store. Buyers and sellers will be notified via an email from the Exchange team once store transfers have been completed.

    Post-purchase 24/7 Shopify support

Once you log into your Shopify account for the first time and choose a subscription plan, Shopify Support Gurus are available 24/7 to help you with the settings of the store.
