Why this business was started

Yoga is a fast growing physical and mental activity for men and women of all ages, with over 2 million Australians now practicing yoga. We started the business as we spotted a gap in the yoga mat market alongside the growing trend of yogis expressing themselves with the new printed yoga mat designs. Our unique "Travel Yoga Mat" is lightweight and foldable, yet remaining thick enough to provide sufficient support to those practicing yoga on the go. It also serves as a perfect overlay to a studio yoga mat. Our "Luxury Yoga Mat" is in line with standard market dimensions, providing greater support for those yogis who need it and don't mind carrying a heavier mat. Our designs come in a variety of colours and designs to suit all tastes - with all designs proving to be very popular. Yoga mats are a great product to retail with very few returns as people know what they are buying and what to expect.

The reason of selling this business

My partner and I both have full time jobs and just haven't been able to put the focus in that the business deserves. The business is clearly successful and has proven there is a real opportunity here for someone to take to the next level. We're proud of what we've set up and are convinced that someone could make a real success of this brand given the progress made in the first 14 months of trading. Product reviews = 4.93/5 - our products have hit the mark and we get customers coming back for the latest designs.

What's involved in running this business

This is a very hands-off business (if you need it to be!). Each year create a new range of designs and make the order from our supplier. Once this is done everything looks after itself - you simply set the marketing up to run by itself and the fulfillment provider looks after storage and shipping. As with all businesses, the more you put in the more you get out. The unit economics are very attractive with a great ROI from each supplier order (all quoted in AUD): RRP $119 Luxury mat / $94 Travel mat = average c.$106 Less net cost per unit $25 (including designs, shipping from China etc) Less delivery cost per unit c.$13 = gross margin of $68 (64%) Monthly costs are low (storage - $170, shopify $120) leaving significant room for marketing expenditure to drive high net margins (c.50%).

Other details about profit: Note - the shopify numbers do not include our offline sales (i.e. wholesale / B2B) - these are significant. The first 12 months was all about setting the foundation - investment in website, social media, SEO, branding, influencers, studio / store relationships, third party sellers etc. Since launch of our 2nd range we have demonstrated a significant step up in results - we now have 18 different products to choose from (up from 6) which has driven increased traffic and conversion. Now that the initial investment and hard work has been done, the business is becoming significantly more profitable. Currently generating $2,800AUD cash per month without even touching the business as it is fully automated (apart from the odd customer query). Sales up 180% on prior year with significant growth in e-commerce and B2B. With further organic traffic and social traffic continuing to increase we expect profitability to hit closer to 65% in the long-term.
