Why this business was started

I started the business in late 2019 after observing a gap in the marketplace for makers and professional carpenters, woodworkers, etc. When we think about a maker buying a $200 resin form, or a woodworker buying a $2,000 table saw, we know that the tools matter. And yet, there was nothing being innovated in the form of the gear these makers wore in their shops. The idea was to provide performance textiles (think Lululemon like) with a brand that crystallized the tribe of makers/professionals across the country. That brand is WRK | Performance Work Wear

The reason of selling this business

I have decided it is time to sell because I am the limiting factor in growth. The brand, in its first year (launch year), performed very well for a start up concept that nobody knew about. That first year was 2020, right when the COVID pandemic hit. First year sales between E-Commerce and private outfitting of general contractor crews was just about $20k. In 2021, my own personal woodworking business took off, and I haven't had the ability to market the brand to the tribe in a way that grows the brand. That said, 2021 has seen a little over $5k in sales, and we recently did a pre sale product to test the brand integrity, selling $1,300 over a 72 hour period pre sale. Again, I am the one who can't scale my own time into growing WRK Gear, although the brand is still able to place well. That is why it's time to sell.

What's involved in running this business

Running the business includes designing new products (if desired; will share the ideas I have but know that the brand evangelists share their ideas openly), working with the manufacturer (domestic, Charleston, SC), fulfilling order, and then marketing through social platforms. Please know that the only social platform we market through currently is Instagram.

Other details about profit: The brand is of interest to in store retail along with private general contractors/business owners. We have had success in both arenas, more so with general contractors. In 2020 we sold $2,500 to a private general contractor, outfitting his entire crew. While we received interest from retailers (ACE Hardware), we didn't have the resources to fulfill.

Post sale, I would love to support the new owner with both quantitative tasks (how to use Shopify, etc.) for the first 30 days, and then qualitative coaching tasks (what the brand loyalists have asked for, what new products would be of interest, what products should be culled, and more than a hand off to our manufacturer to support new growth) for the first 90 days.

Private label means they take their current apparel solutions and privately label them ours. White label means we can develop anything with them, from scratch. This relationship is a valuable one to the brand; they are vertically integrated into their own mills in El Salvador and Colombia, which helps us with supply chain challenges tremendously.
