Business Story
Why this business was started
I launched BoxThrone on Kickstarter in 2017 and raised over $1 million (including late pledges): [REDACTED]
I started it because there was clearly a gap in the market for storage systems designed for board games. Most people just shove their games on whatever shelves, but those don't meet the needs for people with a lot of board games (view the Kickstarter link above for details). I have always been into brand marketing and decided to give product design a shot. It took off and has given me the foundation for a bigger gaming-oriented company.
You can listen to more on my Shopify Insiders podcast: [REDACTED]
The reason of selling this business
I want to focus on actual board games, smaller accessories and other projects I am currently working on. I don't have time to maximize BoxThrone to the limits, and while it hums along nicely - someone with experience and passion for marketing could really take this brand to the next level. I also just didn't have time to build up the brand on social media or using email marketing - which was dumb because we have an engaged following and thousands of recurring customers. -Included in this sale is all my BoxThrone sites and domains: storemyboardgames.com, [REDACTED], [REDACTED], storemyboardgames.com.au, NOT JUST storemyboardgames.com. More details below. -Freight costs have risen over the past year - when freight costs return to normal levels your profit will be MUCH MUCH higher. Getting the product made locally or partially locally could also be a factor to consider in gaining additional profitability. In 2020, we had a profit of almost $200,000, and that was with about half the customer base of today and prices about 20% lower than they are now. Once freight prices return to normal this business will be very profitable (freight prices are dropping every month). - THE BIG BONUS is that you will also be receiving my v2 more efficiently design for the product which can be launched on Kickstarter or on the store at a wider profit margin.
What's involved in running this business
My routine is as follows: - Every 2-3 months reset the countdown timers on the websites - Run Facebook and Instagram ads - Every month update the shipping statuses on the website and send out an update email to customers - Tabulate pre-orders for the wave and send the totals to the factory - Upload US orders to Shipbob and the WRO labels for packages to be applied at the factory - Send UK/EU warehouse orders and get pre-printed shipping labels - Factory organizes freight, before it arrives upload the orders to Shipbob for processing - We have a customer service employee who will help with customer orders if they have issues What you can do extra that I haven't been doing: - Better email marketing - Post more often and engage more on social media - Reach out to influencers - Attend trade shows - Break into the retail furniture space

Seller‘s Advice
How to grow this business
Honestly, this is a shockingly good deal for you and painful for me to sell after building it up for 5 years, but my focus is just too split right now and I need to focus on the gaming side of my business which is where my passion lies. This product has massive potential for the right buyer - a huge loyal, recurring customer base and dependable suppliers. How to grow this business: - redesign the product to be more cost-efficient (I will be providing this V2 design with the sale of the store) and RE-LAUNCH to huge fanfare. - we are currently doing bi-monthly pre-order campaigns in order to limit storage time in the warehouses. If you have a warehouse space in the US that you own or lease you would save yourself A LOT in logistics money by having fewer freight shipments. - I would strongly recommend launching the V2 on Kickstarter as well, the campaign for which I can help and advise with (likely to do at least $500k in pledges) - We have a LOYAL RECURRING CUSTOMER base because the product is modular - people are always looking to expand their systems - 47% of purchases are from recurring customers - Essentially this is a furniture business - you can attend conventions and events with the product, get it into Wayfair, diversify on Amazon, create new products etc. If you have synergies in that space with your existing products, you could electrify this business. - I did not do much email marketing, which is a huge missed opportunity as my email list has over 50,000 subscribers, in addition to 10,000+ recurring Shopify customers. There is untapped gold in this email list if you know how to do good email marketing. - I also didn't do much social media, giveaways, influencer marketing etc. This also represents a huge untapped opportunity for you. The few times I did influencer reviews, it did result in thousands of dollars in sales. - I recommend reducing and refining the number of SKUs - this can be done by using a different 3PL or warehouse service - the only reason we have 70+ SKUs is because we ship ground rate for packages individually. This means an order could have 6 boxes that each ship individually - if you have a more mature 3PL you can combine these and reduce shipping costs for your customers. - This sale includes not just storemyboardgames.com, but also storemyboardgames.co.uk, storemyboardgames.ca, storemyboardgames.com.au - we have customers in the US, UK, Australia, EU and Canada - so you can exploit marketing opportunities in each of those reasons as well. I'd recommend only shipping to Austrlia twice a year as shipping costs there are high and volume is lower than the others. US sales represent about 75% of total sales, followed by EU/UK at about 15%, Canada and Australia at 5% each. - A website refresh would also do wonders (I've been using the Debut theme for 5 years....) along with an interative color picker like other furniture websits - Definitely need a refresh on Facebook/Instagram advertising - I've been using the same ads for 4 years straight - a lot of potential if you know how to use it.
Skills to have
- Email marketing: understand sales funnels (I didn't do this much so if you do any email marketing you'll be tapping into new potential)
- Social media marketing: liase with influencers and do giveaways, sponsorships etc.
- Social media ads: The majority of traffic comes from Pinterest and Facebook ads - you should be willing to explore other mediums too like TikTok etc. that I never took advantage of.
- Understand a little bit of manufacturing, freight, and 3PLs etc. We've been using the same factory and freight forwarder for 5 years and they're very dependable. We use Shipbob for our warehousing and they are pretty quick and reasonably priced.
- Having knowledge of the furniture industry would be a HUGE asset, and knowing a little bit about board games and the hobby would be good too (although this can be learned quickly and I can help you on that side of stuff)
